Chicago
Hot Dog Bowl

All the Chicago dog flavor. None of the bun.

This lower-carb kitchen experiment takes the flavors of a classic Chicago-style hot dog, chops everything into a bowl, and swaps the bun for crisp shredded iceberg lettuce. It’s inspired by the original—not pretending to be the official article.

Make It Your Own

Add more shredded lettuce for a larger-volume meal.

Mix shredded cabbage with the iceberg for extra crunch.

Add diced cucumber.

Increase the sport peppers for additional heat.

Add extra pickle for more acidity.

Use grilled hot dogs instead of pan-browned.

Use bright-green Chicago relish when available.

For an even lighter version, reduce the sugary relish.

As for ketchup? You’re in charge of your own kitchen. Just know Chicago may have opinions.

A smart swap

Why the Bowl Works

The bun is removed while most of the signature Chicago dog ingredients remain. The majority of the traditional bun’s carbohydrate load is eliminated, although relish and individual hot dog brands can still contain some carbohydrates.

Iceberg lettuce keeps the whole thing crisp, fresh, and substantial enough to eat with a fork.

Chicago Dog Notes

A classic Chicago-style hot dog is more than a list of toppings—it’s a particular combination of tang, heat, crunch, and savory flavor. This bowl borrows that personality, then takes its own path.

Start lightly with the celery salt; it’s essential, but a little goes a long way.
